- Using the Software Center (ELMS) -
Disk Purchase (Buy)
Advantage: Using the Purchase option is an ideal choice for those who are using slower dial-up modems (or do not have a disk burner) but would like to have a copy of that software on disk(s) shipped directly from Microsoft. The cost is reasonable and includes charges only for the disk medium and shipping. Prices are set by Microsoft and will vary according to the number of disks included with the software product.
Disadvantage: Purchases can only be made online through ELMS, and not all software titles are available for purchase (see the Course-Software List under Authorized Software). More recent titles might only be available on DVD and require a DVD reader. Also, purchases can only be made using a credit card (MC/Visa only).
Download ISO Disk Images
Advantage: An ideal choice for anyone having a high-speed connection (DSL or Cable Modem) and disk burner and who would like to have a copy of that software on disk(s).
Disadvantage: Image files must be downloaded to your home computer, and additional software may be required to create a disk from an image file in order to install the software. More recent titles might only be available as a DVD image file and require a DVD burner. Without a high-speed connection, it could take days to download even one disk image.
(Note: see the ISO Images document for additional details).
- Other Options -
Library (LRC) Checkout
Advantage: This may be your only choice if none of the ELMS options (above) are reasonable choices for you.
Disadvantage: More recent titles might only be available on DVD and require a DVD reader. You might have to wait for disks to become available if all copies are currently checked out, and once you have them in your possession, you have just 2 days to install and return the software. Also, according to MSDNAA license and regardless of being able to download/burn ISO images, you still are not allowed to make a copy of any disk that you borrow while it is in your possession. However, if during the duration of the class you experience problems that require reloading that software, you may be able to borrow it again.
Considerations:
Regardless of your choice, all software is subject to license restrictions according to the MSDN EULA, MSDNAA Amendment, and IMS Department policies. Also, please keep in mind that it is a privilege and a convenience, not a right, to have access to these options through Microsoft and the Moraine Valley IMS Department. No one can argue that they cannot successfully complete a course because they do not have the software on their home computers - everyone has access to everything they need in their classroom and on designated open lab computers. Although it may be inconvenient at times, that software is available on-campus to all students enrolled in IMS department courses, as it was in the past before the MSDNAA license was available. Students enrolled in IMS department courses that are offered online must consider other alternatives if none of these options are suitable for them.
