What are online courses at Moraine Valley?

Moraine Valley  allows you to "attend" class through the World Wide Web. Online classes are ideal for students who need flexibility in setting their own time for learning and studying. Students need a computer with specific hardware and software requirements to interact with their instructor and other students because many course requirements are "online." Some online classes may require that you come to campus, or another approved location, for tests and library/classroom/lab activities.

How are online courses different than traditional classes?

While online courses are academically equivalent to on-campus courses, they demand a lot from the student.  Students must recognize that they need good time management skills in order to be successful online.

By using the Internet, you are able to communicate with your instructor and other students in your class. You can participate in online discussions and send and receive your assignments using our online system.

There are two types of online class at Moraine Valley.  Fully "online" classes do not meet on campus at all, although you may have to take your tests at the Testing Center.  "Classroom/online" classes meet occasionally on campus. Whichever type you are in, however, you should recognize that online courses do have established assignment due dates throughout the semester, just as traditional courses do.

What amount of time should I include in my schedule for an online course?

Online courses generally require more time than a traditional face-to-face class. Online students must be able to invest the extra time and effort needed to keep up with assigned reading, assigned projects, and other class assignments. Students taking an online course worth three credit hours should plan to spend at least 9 hours per week completing course requirements.
