Lesson 1 - Working with Self and Peer Review
Assessments
Introduction
Sandi knows that
allowing students to review and assess their peers assignments facilitates
collaboration and student engagement in the learning process, so she decides to
use the new Self and Peer Assessment functionality provided by Blackboard. She
creates assignments that students submit for peer review. Also, she creates
assessment criteria that students will use to grade their peers. She also allows
each student to self-evaluate. After all students have graded their peers, she
sends the results to the grade center, so the scores can be included in
the total grade calculations.
At the end of the semester, she exports all the
self and peer assessments and imports them in her next semester course.
Objectives
At the end of this
lesson, you will be able to:
- Create a Self and Peer Review Assignment.
- Create assessment criteria to be used by
each user to review their peers' assignments.
- Monitor submissions and evaluations.
- View and send the results of the peer
reviews to the grade center.
- Export your assessment and import it back to your training course.
Learning Activities
To create a
Self and Peer Assessment:
- Please click the Creating
a Self and Peer Assessment tutorial created by Blackboard.
- Read the
Creating a Self and Peer Assessment documentation written by Blackboard.
Read the Completing
an Assessment and Viewing
and Sending Results to the Grade Center documentation written in the
Blackboard Instructor Manual and modified to fit our needs.
In this workshop course, go to Assignments and click
View/Complete Assessment to complete the Peer Review Assignment as
a student. Please evaluate yourself and three colleagues.
After you complete the self and peer assessment in this workshop course,
go to your training course and do the following:
- Create a self and peer assessment in the Assignments section.
- Create assessment criteria for each item.
- Have at least two of your colleagues complete the assessment and
evaluate two other colleagues.
- IMPORTANT: Please make sure you set up the Submission
and Evaluation dates within the date limits of this workshop.
Otherwise, you will not be able to see the results.
- Monitor all submissions and evaluations by clicking the Self
and Peer Assessments link in the Control Panel. You have the
option to view Submissions, Evaluations, and/or Results. However,
results have not been incorporated in the grade center calculations
until you send them to the grade center.
- Send the results to the Grade Center by clicking Results
and then the Send Results to Grade Center button. If
you go to the Grade Center, you will see a column for the Self and Peer
Assessment with scores for each student.
- Export your assessment and import it back to your training course.
Post any comments or questions in the Self
and Peer Assessments online discussion located in the Discussion
Board area of this workshop.
Conclusion
In this lesson, you learned how to create and
work with a self and peer assessment. You learned also how the results are sent
to the grade center to be included in the total grade calculations. In the next
unit, you will learn how to work with the Grade Center, previously called
Gradebook.
